011. Why does The Tuned Cup collect and use my data?
We want to make the best possible reading experience, and that means knowing some things about our readers. Knowing which guides you read tells us what is going on with your cup — too sour, too bitter, a machine that leaks — and that decides what we show you elsewhere on the site.
It also matters that The Tuned Cup is funded by advertising. That requires the use of reader data: for example, to work out who might be interested in our guides so we can show them a The Tuned Cup ad on another site. Our advertisers ask us to use reader data so their ads reach the right audience.
022. What type of data is collected about me?
It depends which services you use, and there are two kinds of collection: direct and indirect.
Direct means you hand it to us — for example, submitting your email address to subscribe.
Indirect happens passively as you use the site. Our tracking technologies collect data about your reading behavior, such as which guides you read and how often you visit. Third-party advertisers collect behavioral data tied to the ads shown here. We also collect data about readers from sources such as privately owned databases and social media platforms.
033. What does The Tuned Cup do with the data it collects?
We use it to tailor our content and other offerings to you, for example by recommending guides that may be useful. Exactly which data we use depends on the offering and how you are using it. We also use your data to tailor your experience, which includes marketing and advertising.
044. How are you keeping my data safe?
We have put organizational, technological and physical safeguards in place to keep reader data secure internally, and we keep upgrading them. No system is perfect, and we will not claim ours is.
055. What can I do to protect my own data?
Plenty, and it is worth doing. Use a different password on every site and a password manager to hold them. Turn on two-factor authentication wherever it is offered. Review the cookie and tracking settings in your browser — our Cookie Policy explains where they are for each browser.
066. Does The Tuned Cup support the Global Privacy Control?
Yes. When we detect a GPC signal from a reader’s browser in a place where the GDPR, the CCPA or a similar privacy law applies, we stop sharing that reader’s personal data online with other companies — except with our own service providers.
The French press supports the Global Privacy Control, and every other kind of control, as long as nobody plunges before four minutes.
